All around the U.S., automakers are abandoning sedans to focus on utility vehicles. But the 2022 Toyota Camry shows that there is still strong demand for passenger cars - it's just a matter of making a good one. In 2021, the Camry was the bestselling sedan in America. In 2022, it continues to offer a compelling blend of modern tech, advanced safety, excellent fuel economy, and the kind of engaging driving dynamics made possible only by a low center of gravity - particularly if you opt for the excellent TRD model.

Spacious and comfortable

The 2022 Toyota Camry is, first and foremost, positioned as an affordable, family-friendly sedan. That makes spaciousness and comfort one of its priorities - and customers seeking both of these things will be glad to find that the Camry offers them in spades. At the rear, you'll find 38 inches of legroom, making it possible for even taller adults to stretch their legs. Behind those seats is a generous 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space, and they can be folded in a 60/40 split to accommodate even more cargo. At the front, the seats are not only comfy but perfectly positioned for maximum outward visibility and long-distance support. After being around for more than 30 years, the car's ergonomics are simply superb.

Bang for the buck

You don't have to pay extra for a higher trim to get loads of standard features in the 2022 Camry. Every model comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, high-definition touch-screen infotainment system with built-in Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, two USB ports (one USB-C and one USB-A), a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, Bluetooth® connectivity, and even Amazon Alexa compatibility. That's not to mention the long list of standard driver-assistance technologies - more on that below.

And if you do want to invest more in your Camry, there's plenty of incentive to do so. Features like wireless charging, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, and genuine leather upholstery are all available at higher trim levels and give the Toyota sedan a genuine upscale feel.

Advanced driver assistance

All Toyota Camry models have Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+, one of the automaker's most high-tech suites of advanced driver assistance systems. Its most important feature is automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, which can autonomously slow the Camry and even bring it to a stop to avoid a collision, even in low-light conditions. It can also detect bicyclists, something many competing technologies by rival manufacturers struggle to do. Other TSS 2.5+ technologies include full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane departure alert with steering assistance. In addition, the Camry is available with an optional 360-degree surround view camera and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Efficient, dynamic performance

Most 2022 Camry models are motivated by a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine rated at 202 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it sends power to the front wheels and gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.[1] The car has a responsive throttle and steering feel, making it fun to drive on short and long trips alike - particularly if you go for the XLE, XSE, or TRD models that use a 301-horsepower V6 engine with optional all-wheel drive.

If you'd rather increase fuel economy, several Camry trims are offered with a hybrid powertrain that combines a slightly less powerful engine with two electric motors, generating a net system 208 horsepower. These models use regenerative braking technology to recharge the battery pack as you drive, extending range and improving efficiency to get you an impressive 52 mpg combined.[1]
