2021 Toyota 4Runner vs 2020 Toyota 4Runner
Serving Enid, OK
The 4Runner is Toyota’s rugged SUV that has been a leading option among many drivers for decades. Since its introduction in 1984, the 4Runner has evolved through four major generational updates. It has also received numerous mid-generational improvements. As you dig deeper to learn about the current 4Runner, understanding the differences between the 2020 and 2021 model years is essential.
Performance
The Toyota 4Runner’s fifth-generation was introduced several years ago, and both the 2020 and 2021 models are in this generation. In 2021, the 4Runner Trail Special Edition is introduced. It is available with the same powertrain that is in all other trims for both years. This is a V6, 4.0-liter engine with a five-speed auto transmission. This pairing produces 270 horsepower. While most other mechanical features are unchanged between 2020 and 2021, the TRD Pro trim has two updates. In this trim, the 2021 4Runner has retuned shock absorbers and new wheels.
Appearance
This SUV has a truck-based design and boxy shoulders that are easy to recognize on the road. Its iconic style has been modernized only slightly over the years, and this adds to its appeal. The major update to the exterior of the 4Runner in 2021 is the addition of LED headlights as standard equipment throughout the trim lines. The aggressive front end with its downturned grille and angled headlights is uniform at all trim levels. Roof rails, running boards, roof cargo racks, and other features are standard or optional in select trims.
Features
Inside this three-row SUV, you can appreciate a slew of modern features. The design and features for all carryover trims are unchanged. This means that your new 4Runner could have cloth or leather seats, a sunroof, a multi-information display, an 8-inch touch display screen, a JBL sound system, and other equipment.

* Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner's Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on base curb weight plus the total weight of any cargo, occupants, and added vehicle equipment. "Added vehicle equipment" includes additional standard/optional equipment and accessories added by the manufacturer, dealers, and/or vehicle owners. The only way to be certain of your vehicle's exact curb weight is to weigh your vehicle without passengers or cargo. [Calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.] Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper or side-door kick sensors may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off. See Owner's Manual for limitations.
